vedic chanting 1:1

In many traditional cultures the use of sound is a significant aspect of spiritual practice. Sound, in the Indian tradition, is second only to the Supreme. The Vedas are believed to have been revealed to the Rsi-s (Seers) while in a deep meditative state and record the multiple experiences in a vast collection of hymns that touch upon the life of humans, the Divine and their convergence. In the vision and journey of these inspired poets they speak of the systematic spiritual ascent of humans. The term “Veda” implies “that which can be known” and through the mantras we make contact.

The Vedas were and continue to be transmitted by means of oral recitation, through the art of chanting in Sanskrit it is called “Adhyayanam”, meaning “that which takes you inside.” This is how I am learning from my teacher Mrs. Menaka Desikachar, following the tradition of Yogacarya T Krishnamacharya and T.K.V Desikachar. The practice of chanting involves listening to the teacher and then doing your best to repeat the sounds exactly the same way. This process develops the ability to listen and as a consequence patience and memory are enhanced. Vedic chanting also allows us to experience silence. We can not be engaged in something else or become distracted while we listen to the teacher because we have to repeat back to them. This attention requires us to be silent, and it is for this reason that chanting is not only a tool in meditation but is also a meditative process in itself.

The frequency of these powerful sounds, which when pronounced in the right manner and with the right intention produce specific vibrations within our body. Sound can penetrate through all our layers and reach the most subtle aspects of our being. This frequency positively changes your body, your Home. Vedic chant practice moves you towards the light in your heart therefore your physical, mental and emotional state benefits too.

As you practice more and more your breath capacity increases and as you begin to find your voice, you will notice this practice is a journey back to your Being. Connecting you to your own inner sound, the symphony of your soul.
